Carol Hurst is a third grade teacher at DeSoto Trail. She is a wonderful member of our community, having loved on and taught many of our children over the years. She is living out one of the most heartbreaking experiences a wife and mother could. She needs our help.
Mrs. Hurst's husband Nathan had a brain stem stroke in February 2017. This left him with "locked in" syndrome. He mind is intact, but he has no voluntary movement other than his ability to move his eyes. He can move his eyes up and down reliably and has limited side movement. Rectal cancer was discovered as the cause and removed in May 2017. After six months at various hospitals in and out of the state, Nathan came home in August. He is confined to a hospital bed in their home and to his wheelchair through the use of a lift. Nathan requires around the clock care. He also benefits from continued therapy.
Mrs. Hurst has used up her leave and is now back at work. They have needed to purchase an expensive special needs van to transport Nathan. They would like to purchase other items that will help Nathan survive (such as a specially trained service dog that that could help sense and respond to his respiratory needs) and thrive (like electrical stimulation products that may help him regain movement, a wheelchair that can go "off road," and additional therapy services). They would eventually like to move into a home that is better suited to their needs (one level, wide doorways, walk in shower, wood floors).
