Support a Preschool and Community Center in Zambia

I was born, bred and raised as a Canadian but Africa has always been in my heart. I can’t explain why, but I just knew it was the place I was meant to be. My feet first touched African soil in 2009, and my life changed directions the very same day. After a year of volunteer work I came home and took one year to decide what I wanted to do. Not one day went by that I didn’t long to go back. So, I sold my house and sold and gave away everything that I owned and in 2011, with a backpack in tow, I came back to the place I now call home. I’ve been in Africa for almost 9 years now. It’s hard to believe. During that time, I’ve volunteered with everything from orphaned/injured African wildlife to working with Great White Sharks. As well as teaching in villages and townships, to working with Bushmen in Botswana and teaching HIV education in prison. I’ve seen and done a lot, and treasured every opportunity and every minute I’ve been here.
With all of my volunteer, cultural experience and knowledge, my greatest reward and passion would be to work with an entire community (from the very young to the very old)
I can see that there are so many solutions to the day-to-day challenges that people face here, simply through education.
Turning a Dream into Reality
It all started in 2013 as a just dream. To build a Pre-School and Community Center in a small rural village called Mwandi in Livingstone, Zambia. Fast forward a few years, with a lot of hard work, determination, tears and triumphs, an NGO has been set up, property has been purchased and the idea of the Baobuyu Learning Center was born! The primary goal of the Learning Center is to provide as much FREE education as possible to the entire community.
Baobuyu Learning Center Today!
Baobuyu Learning Center is a Zambian-registered NGO and non-profit organization which has been operating in the community since 2016.
During the day, our pre-school provides a safe environment for students to develop a range of skills that will set the foundation for them when they start primary school. We cater for pupils from ages 2 to 7 years old, and we use a wide variety of visual and interactive learning practices in combination with small class sizes to ensure all our pupils reach their full potential.
In the afternoons, holidays and on weekends, the school acts as a community center where we provide FREE education and workshops for the wider community. Courses cover topics which include health talks, girl empowerment classes, computer literacy, skills training, HIV education and so much more.
Our Girl Power group provides a much-needed space for young girls to learn about issues important to them: puberty, careers, drugs and alcohol, relationships and much more. We want girls in the community to feel confident, empowered and ready to take on the world! We also want to give the girls a chance to just be girls and have fun - something we can often take for granted. That’s why we also do a lot of dancing, singing, drumming and art classes with them as well.
Baobuyu Learning Center relies on your support to make all of our programs and courses possible. 100% of your donation goes directly toward the continued running expenses of our community center and all the benefits that this provides to members of the Mwandi community.
Every little bit helps! Plus, you will become part of something big!
Thank you so much for all your support!
