We are medical students at the FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and we will be participating on a medical service expedition to Peru through the non-profit organization Project Amazonas July 30 - August 7, 2016. During this trip, we will be serving indigenous communities that live along the Amazon River. Students will be completing physical exams and assessments and distributing appropriate medications to the patients in the local community. All students will be supervised by an attending physician. During this week-long trip to Peru, we estimate that we can provide care to 300 patients. The populations we will be caring for live in rural areas accessible only be the tributaries of the Amazon river, and thus have limited access to care. These communities are vital to the survival of the Amazon environment, helping to protect and conserve the Amazonian rain forest. Therefore, we are especially excited to participate on this trip to care for those who are caring for our environment. The cost of participation for each medical student is $1125. This cost covers shelter and food during the course of the service expedition as well as medical supplies and other needs for the community. Additionally, each student will also be covering the cost of their flights to and from Peru.
We are grateful for every dollar that comes our way and are so excited to serve these incredible Amazonian communities.
