Hydrotherapy Bath for Twins with Sickle Cell
Donation protected
Please donate to support life-changing hydrotherapy treatment for two brilliant young boys who suffer from Sickle Cell
At Hackney Quest , we have worked with Margaret and her sons for many years. They are a brilliant family, who are always keen to help and support others, and have always overcome the very many challenges they've faced.
Margaret's 15 Year-Old twin boys - who'd prefer not to be named/identifiable here, hence the very old photo! - have sickle cell, and are often in acute pain. It has affected their schooling, their friendships, and their mental health. They are wonderful boys who have so much to give, but they are restricted greatly by their illness.
Hydrotherapy is one of the most effective pain-relief treatments for sickle cell patients. The boys used to be able to have hydrotherapy locally, but that is no longer possible as the local pool has closed.
This is how Margaret describes their situation:
"Currently the boys have a monthly blood transfusion. For much of the month, this is very effective providing them with an energy boost and much less pain. However ,the last seven days before another treatment both boys often have painful crises, leaving them lethargic, in great pain, and with significantly reduced mobility. This is the most difficult time for me as a mother, seeing my sons in such pain, knowing there are treatments and remedies available that could help them but that we can't access or afford. Seeing the drastic difference between the start and end of the month, is particularly upsetting and has prompted me to research what I can do to improve their quality of life during these periods.
This is where the hydrotherapy bath comes in. The use of hydrotherapy baths is one of the most effective and safe forms of exercising acutely aching joints, allowing patients to get relief from the pains that the disease causes. This form of treatment also has proven effects to increase lung capacity, allowing for a greater flow of oxygen into the body. A number of studies have concluded that aquatic rehabilitation can be used to improve the clinical condition of sickle cell anaemia patients.
Hydrotherapy treatment will make a big difference to my boys' well–being and long term health . It will mean they spend fewer days in acute pain. As they are getting older, it is becoming impossible for me to lift and carry them into a conventional bath for pain relief, and it is less effective than a hydrotherapy bath even when I could."
A hydrotherapy bath in their home would change their lives, improving their quality of life significantly. It would mean that they are in significantly less pain and they can participate more in all the things that any teenager should be able to. This funding would pay for the purchase and installation of the bath.
Any support will be hugely appreciated by Margaret and her family, as well as by us at Hackney Quest.
