Wheelchair Accessible Van for Carl

If you are looking to support someone who truly makes a difference, then look no further than Carl Bernard. This 33-year-old man works tirelessly to improve the lives of those around him – most notably those with accessibility needs through Next to Lead and Niagara Centre for Independent Living. Now he needs our help!
Carl was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type II as a young child. This rare progressive neuromuscular disorder causes all muscles to weaken and die. There is no cure for SMA and as an infant, Carl was never expected to reach adulthood. As such, being an adult with SMA means living a life of limitations and although he puts a valiant effort, he cannot overcome them alone.
In order to improve his quality of life, we are looking to purchase a wheelchair accessible van to help him travel to appointments, visit friends and family and make the most of the life he has been given. Carl had to move from his hometown of Brantford to Port Colborne to find affordable/accessible housing. Leaving his hometown meant leaving his family and friends, and only seeing them a few times per year. He cannot just hire temporary transportation because a wheelchair accessible taxi would charge him upwards of $300 for the two-hour trip. This is a price he cannot pay as his sole income is through ODSP. As a result, he misses out on many family events and can only see his friends when they can drive to him. He has also had to cancel multiple appointments due to a lack of funding for transportation.
Please consider donating to my brother’s cause. He deserves to be able to go to medical appointments, family gatherings, and day trips with his friends unburdened by an enormous and unreasonable transportation price tag.
