"I am Water" is a documentary film about Lila Bruyere, a Residential School Survivor. Lila has been a member of the National Survivor's Circle for Truth and Reconciliation Commission and is a public speaker and educator. The film will follow Lila to her home reserve of Couchiching First Nation near Fort Frances, Ontario. In the context of the uncovering of missing Residential School children, and the ongoing genocide of First Peoples, Lila recounts her early family life and Residential School experience. From her home on Rice Bay to St. Marguerite's Residential School to the streets of Fort Frances, nowhere was she safe from abuse. Lila tells the story of how she attempted to cope with her abuse, which led to struggles with alcohol, relationships, and parenting. The people in Lila's life come together to help tell her story, her attempt to escape from the school, her journey to sobriety, and finally earning her education. It is the power of water that acts as a form of escape and a healing force in Lila's life and ultimately gives her the strength to face her traumatic past, a past she shares with generations of Indigenous children and with the public through her compelling testimony.

For the community, the documentary will create valuable opportunities for engagement and education. It serves as a poignant reminder of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action, particularly in child welfare, education, health, and justice. By highlighting the ongoing effects of trauma and intergenerational trauma, the project will foster a deeper understanding among viewers, prompting dialogue and reflection within the community. Additionally, it will encourage collaboration with Indigenous communities and organizations, enriching the local arts scene with diverse voices and perspectives, and promoting a more inclusive and informed community.
