I need help to get a surgery for my back

A little about me:

I am a 41-year-old man, married to the world's most handsome and patient wife. My wife is a healthcare worker and works night shifts. Together we have two children who attend kindergarten and school. Our children are active and participate in several leisure activities.

We cannot assume that I can help, as we can never say in advance how affected I am by pain. So much of the follow-up of the children, housework, and everything else falls on my wife.

Since elementary school i have played saxophone and klarinett in band, I have greatly enjoyed playing with others. I still play actively. The camaraderie in the band is like medicine and gives me the opportunity to be social with people who have the same interests as me.

By profession, I am a trained electrician and marine electrical technician and worked in recent years, before the back problems started, on a boat abroad. The job gave me so much both professionally and socially. Now I am 100% disabled.

Health situation:

My journey with back problems started in 2014, and I had surgery for a herniated disc. This was the start of many painful years with frequent hospital visits, without them being able to find out what is causing my back not to heal. I have been in rehabilitation different places through the public system, but this has not had much effect.

In the spring of 2023, I visited a private hospital ‘Volvat’ in the hope that they could find an explanation for my pain. Examinations there show that I need two disc prostheses. In the hope that this was an operation I could get through the public healthcare system, I brought the medical report to my next hospital appointment. There, I received the disappointing news that surgery with two new disc prostheses will not be covered.

The doctor at Volvat believes that the operation has documented effects and can enable me to be both the husband and father I want to be. Perhaps even start working again.

Current situation:

All these years of pain affect me. I am not able to be the person I want to be. At times, I am very depressed as a result of the hopelessness I feel over not being able to cope and because it is exhausting to always be in pain. I see that most things at home become my wife's responsibility; she cannot rely on me to complete tasks I have promised to do. The children, who should be carefree, have seen too many times that their father is in so much pain that he cannot function in daily life and also that the ambulance has to pick up their father because he is in pain. They are considerate of me and become anxious during the periods when I am in a lot of pain. All I want is to be the reliable person my family can lean on and be confident will always be there for them. I hope and believe that the operation can help give us a new and better everyday life.

If we had the finances to cover the operation ourselves, I would have already had the surgery. We have now tried to save up ourselves, but it will take many years before we can save the entire amount of 350,000 Nok. 35,000 $. 32,000 €. ourselves.
