Hi, I am Claire and I am Iain's wife. Iain has been working away from our family, in Korea, for the past 18 months and we were looking forward to spending Christmas together. The week before he was due to travel he complained of being unwell and visited the doctor who thought it was just a cold. I couldn't reach him on the 16th of December and that evening he was found unconscious in his flat and was rushed to hospital. Iain had developed infective endocarditis - a rare and potentially fatal infection.
Iain was found to be suffering from multiple organ failure and sepsis and the infection had damaged his heart valve and sent lesions into his brain. Iain was cared for in ICU for many weeks but didn't fully regain consciousness and we took the difficult decision to move him to a smaller hospital in Korea to provide palliative care.
Typically, Iain is battling hard and defying his initial prognosis of only surviving for a matter of weeks. We have now been in this precarious situation as a family for 17 weeks and it is putting an ever-increasing strain on myself and our two children. I would desperately like to raise funds to help repatriate Iain to the UK. Ideally, this will be done with an Air Ambulance and he will be able to live out his remaining time at home with friends and family around him. This can cost in the region of 120,000 pounds. Should that not be possible, or should Iain die before we reach that point, I would like to be able to return him to the UK for a fitting memorial and celebration of his life. This can cost in the region of 20,000 pounds. As this situation continues, so do Iain's hospital bills, which will not be covered by his Korean insurance; as does the need for myself and the children to visit Iain and help him, and us, deal with this final journey.
If you feel that you could help in any way, however small a donation, we would be very grateful. And perhaps you could share with people who have worked, or cycled, or played hockey, or been to school with Iain and recognise how he deserves to be looked after with love and dignity.
Many thanks.
