Be part of a community success story - Please help send Ian Ryder to the Pan American Judo Championships and beyond
Judo is a Japanese martial art and Olympic sport. 17 year old Ian Ryder, a native of Richmond BC, has been trained by the Steveston Judo Club for the past 10 years. He has been the Canadian Champion in his age and weight class for 4 years in a row, and is currently ranked #21 in the world. He has represented Canada in France, Germany, Portugal, Bosnia, Mexico and Chile, and is preparing to travel to Argentina to compete in his second Pan American Judo Championships on July 6 and 7, 2018. Last year he won Bronze at the Pan Ams in Mexico, and qualified for the World Championships in Santiago Chile. See Ian in action
Developing athletes must compete and medal in a number of international qualifying competitions in order to receive funding from Judo Canada. In the interim, families must pay for airfare, accommodation, tournament and training fees, food, gear, medical insurance and more. The Ryder family is deeply grateful to have received financial support from both the Steveston Judo Club and Judo BC. However now that Ian's judo career is taking him farther afield more frequently, the costs of supporting this up and coming Canadian athlete are considerable and challenging.
In an effort to support Ian, his grandfather, Gene Macdonald, is holding a piano recital of his original melodies on June 23 at 7:00 pm at the Richmond Presbyterian Church at 7111 Number 2 Road. Gene is a self taught musician who has always enjoyed music as a hobby and since retirement has been composing his own short pieces. Any donations made towards Ian's judo future will be greatly appreciated. All are welcome and we hope to see you there!
