BRAIN CANCER-ICU Nurse Melisa Ball, Mother of 3.

Melisa Ball, one of Cleveland Clinic Mercy Medical's long-serving and beloved ICU nurses, is now fighting for her life after being diagnosed with a crippling brain tumor. At 43 years old, Melisa is a devoted mother to three beautiful children (Kaitlyn, Devyn, and Miles), a loving daughter to David and Carlene Miller, and a loyal friend and colleague. Recently, she received the devastating diagnosis of grade 2 glioma.
This month, Melisa and her family were shaken by the news that changed their lives forever. In August, after experiencing multiple seizures, she requested a CT scan, hoping to find the cause. The scan revealed a spot that required further investigation. Despite staying optimistic, her MRI confirmed the heartbreaking news of a tumor deep within her frontal lobe—news no one was prepared for.
The physicians in the ICU who work closely alongside her and value her role on the team immediately facilitated the best possible care for her. Just 3 days later, Melisa underwent a biopsy and tumor resection. She was then wheeled into the very ICU where she has cared for so many critically ill patients—this time, as a patient herself, fighting for her life.
In the days following her surgery, Melisa has remained in critical care. Unfortunately, the right side of her body has been severely impacted, resulting in loss of sensation and minimal movement in her right arm and leg. She also has endured medication-resistant seizures, which continue to hinder her rehabilitation process as she works tirelessly to regain strength.
Melisa is an exceptional individual and an invaluable member of the community. For years, she has cared for the sickest patients and comforted families through their most difficult moments. Now, she finds herself in urgent need of care and support.
As a cherished member of our ICU team, Melisa has touched countless lives with her dedication, intelligence, and compassion. Many of us can recall a time when we were deeply impacted by the kindness and care of a nurse—Melisa is the embodiment of that role. Just days before her diagnosis, she was nominated for the coveted Daisy Award. The Daisy Award is a recognition program which celebrates and recognizes nurses that provide patients with excellence in clinical care and also compassion. She was formally recognized for her outstanding service, after a patient's family nominated her for going above and beyond in her care. Beyond her professional excellence, Melisa is a warm-hearted person who lights up every room with her giggly laugh and kind spirit. She makes everyone feel welcome and valued. When the pressure is on, whether managing the needs of her critically ill patients or coordinating with their families, she remains calm and composed, multitasking like no one else.
Melisa has always been the person we turn to in times of need. Her compassion and selflessness have never wavered. Now, the one who has always cared for others is in need of our care. Let's help Melisa and her family face the challenging road ahead by alleviating the financial burden of this incredibly difficult situation. As the sole provider for her family, Melisa is now facing not only the emotional and physical strain but also the enormous financial stress of trying to provide for her children. Your donations will go directly towards covering Melisa's medical expenses and essential living costs for her and her children. On behalf of her family, we ask for your support so that Melisa’s only focus can be on her treatment and recovery. Your thoughts, prayers, and contributions are deeply appreciated. Together, with your continued love and support, we are confident that Melisa will come out of this stronger than ever.
