Run Eugene Run: Diabetes Awareness
Donation protected
Hello. My name is Eugene and I am a diabetic.
I would like to share my story and my fight to bring awareness about diabetes. I have struggled with this disease for over 15 years. All of my immediate family also struggles with it. I had lost my father when I was in college.
As some of you probably already know, Ive recently ran a few marathons. Maybe more than just a few. It's been my main battle strategy in my own struggles to control the disease. Ok, so maybe 23 marathons in 27 months is a bit over the top……a little anyway. If you don't know my story…..please let me share.
In 2012 I got sick and tired of the ever growing number of medicines that I was taking. The doctors kept increasing the meds and the insulin in order to get my blood sugar under control and I was feeling worse and gaining weight. As a former athlete in my youth, I always felt that I could get this thing under control. I just never seemed to be motivated enough. Finally I had hit the wall and enough was enough! I decided to fight! I began a diet regimen that honestly I disliked immensely, but it was working. I dropped about 45 lbs in 6 months ……and then began running.
My blood sugar had dropped and with it I was able to reduce my insulin by 75%. I felt so much better, but I knew that diet alone wasn’t enough alone. I started running short distances, but being competitive by nature, I set the goal of running a marathon and put it on the top of my bucket list. I was never a runner……ever. And here I was setting a ridiculous goal of running one. So…..
In January of 2014, at age 48, I ran my first marathon at Disney in Florida. I finished. I was sore, I was tired, and I was stoked. I had just lost my mother three weeks before the race. In my head I thought maybe I could do another……after all my blood sugars continued to drop and I was feeling even better. So…..
I set the additional ridiculous goal of running a total of running 5 more that first year. I traveled to Florida, Virginia, New York, and Colorado doing a total of Six marathons, six half marathons plus several smaller races that added up to over 600 miles in 2014 and yes I did hear…Run Forest Run all the time.
In 2015 I knew what I wanted to do…..bring awareness to others about diabetes. Every race I went to I shared my story and encouraged others. I was even on the jumbo-tron before the Disney Goofy Challenge sharing my new quest…..12-14 marathons. Well I figured I needed to do something to cause attention…..because I certainly wasn't going to WIN a marathon as slow as I was. I ended up running 13 marathons in 11 different states…..yeah I know…..pretty crazy.
So what's on the schedule for 2016? I filed paperwork to make RUN EUGENE RUN non-profit . I have completed 4 marathons thus far with another 5 scheduled for the fall…..and….. This is where I need your help. It's a much bigger challenge. My big goal for 2016 is to run an ultra-marathon, 50 miles at age 50. My main goal and motivation with Run Eugene Run is to inspire and educate others through running by meeting and talking to people everywhere I go. I need your help to make it become a reality bringing awareness and hope to all about diabetes and that it can be defeated. I cannot do this alone.
I want everyone to know about the effects of diabetes. I have been posting about my hurdles, my struggles, each victory, and each setback. There are many ways in which you can helps me even participate.
First, I need your prayers and words of encouragement.
Secondly, I need financial help to make this happen.
Corporate sponsors, personal sponsors, and spiritual sponsors are all welcome to join my goal. I realize you have many options when it comes to charitable donations. I encourage you to give where your heart is. If your heart is where I am, I ask that you support me in my cause to inspire and encourage others in their fight to live life to the fullest.
On September 17, 2016 I will run 50 miles here in Virginia Beach which will be our first official event for Run Eugene Run. We will not be looking for participants to run along side me at this time, but we will need volunteers and sponsors to help with this rather large undertaking. You will be able to read in detail every step (or mile) of my journey on my blog and other social media. Please, help us in our endeavor to inspire and educate others and slow down the epidemic of diabetes.
