Imagine Joy Campground

This is Alexis, or you may have met me on Tiktok - I'm Queer Mom. Recently I asked a hypothetical question - if I bought some land and turned it into a LGBTQIA+, Intersectional, affirming, loving, and safe place to camp in the south - would you all come, and a lot of you said yes!

This wasn't a hypothetical question to me - It is a dream to open up a safe, loving, and supportive place, where queer and interracial families like mine can feel safe to be ourselves in the outdoors. This past 4th of July, I went camping with my family outside of Atlanta, Georgia. It was a beautiful campground, with a campsite right by the lake. From our tent in the morning we watched the sun rise, we swam until we were all exhausted, ate watermelon, lit sparklers, and giggled at the jokes my 8 and 4 year old made up until we fell asleep. The problem - we camped next to other people for whom my family was unacceptable. Their bumper stickers and aggressive glances our way belying their beliefs. I'm tired of not feeling safe with my children in the outdoors. I'm angry that I feel like I have to constantly look over my shoulder to protect myself and the people I love just because of the way I look, the person I love, and the color of someone's skin.

This is why I am hoping to create the Imagine Joy Campground - a safe, welcoming, and wonderful place to tent camp, park your RV, or stay in a cabin with your family and friends. The camp will be outside of Atlanta, Georgia. Your donation will help create this camp and make it the wonderful place I can see in my head and on the numerous spread sheets I've made. We have lots of goals for the camp that include;

1. Comfort stations - that include real toilets, showers with hot water, and sinks.

2. The necessary infrastructure to welcome any type of RV, tiny house, or other moveable home.

3. Space for tool/woodworking/car repair shop on site so that we can all learn to do those things in a safe environment.

4. Art Studio - who doesn't love arts and crafts?

5. Recreation areas - beach volleyball courts, basketball court, areas for cornhole/horse shoes.

6. A stage to host music/art/dance/comedy and other performances.

7. Long-term tiny house rentals or places for you to come and park your tiny home for a fee.

8. Small working farm with a few animals - I can't buy land and not have some space to grow food and pet horses.

9. Farm stand and camp store - to purchase the food we grow and find any of the necessities that you may have forgotten.

10. A lake for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing.

11. Eventually creating an actual summer camp for young people. 

12. Events just for adults only and events for families - for anyone that doesn't like children as much as I do, we will take some weekends off from them.
