Imbasa Primary School

Hi there!
As many of you know, I have been studying abroad in Cape Town, South Africa since July and I’ve been loving every second of it. During my time here, I’ve been incredibly honored and humbled to work as a teacher at Imbasa Primary School in Nyanga, one of the townships here in Cape Town. I work with 5th graders and it’s safe to say they have taught me so much more than I could ever teach them. Their constant motivation to learn and their patience for difficulties in the classroom is absolutely beautiful. Working with 55 students per class, I have noticed a severe lack of supplies and basic needs for the students. In addition to the lack of chalk, paper and pencils, there always seems to be a problem with the number of chairs in the classroom. It breaks my heart to see students sitting on the floor while others have to sit on broken chairs or even seat two students to one chair. The staff at Imbasa have expressed their concern with this problem, but can’t seem to find a solution as there’s just not enough funding to help give these students the tools to a proper education.
My last visit to Imbasa, I noticed all of the students sitting on tables lined up around the classroom. I asked the teacher I work with, Mama Zana, why this was happening. She explained to me that all the 5th grade classes had to donate most of their chairs to the 6th graders who were testing in the next room. Unfortunately, this meant that my 5th grade students were unable to do their work and had to sacrifice their learning that day. After seeing this, I so desperately want to help these students. With this, I am asking for donations to help Imbasa Primary School give students a better opportunity to learn with the resources that every child deserves.
Help me help these kiddos:)
Thank you so much, anything helps!
