Immersive & interactive art installations with music & code

Hi everyone, I’m Alexandra Cárdenas, a music composer and live coder, originally from Bogotá, Colombia, now based in Berlin, Germany. My life’s journey has been about exploring the intersection of art, music, and technology. For over three decades, I’ve crafted experimental electronic music using live coding, blending composition, programming, and improvisation to invite audiences to rethink the relationship between technology and creativity.

I’ve contributed to more than 50 projects, from founding TOPLAP nodes in Mexico and Berlin to teaching and performing across the globe, demonstrating how open-source coding languages like SuperCollider and TidalCycles are used. I’ve shared my journey as a live coder on The Stack Overflow Podcast, where I highlighted the role of open-source tools in creative expression and discussed the challenges of being a woman in technology and art, emphasizing the need for inclusive spaces that amplify diverse voices. As the co-founder of Livecodera, I’ve mentored and supported women-identifying live coders worldwide, while collaborating with Women in Data and AI to lead workshops and public speaking engagements advocating for accessibility in art and technology. My partnership with Logitech has further amplified these efforts, allowing me to reach wider audiences and inspire creators to explore the intersection of art, technology, and inclusivity.

My latest project, Life Codes, is an immersive and interactive installation featured at the Musica ex Machina exhibition at EPFL Pavilions in Lausanne, Switzerland. Running from September 2024 to June 2025, this exhibit invites audiences to shape music and visuals by rearranging lines of code, blurring the boundaries between creators and participants. The emergence of powerful AI tools like Midjourney has sparked global conversations about the future of art, creativity, and authorship. Life Codes enters this dialogue as a critical exploration of the relationship between humans and algorithms in the creative process.

This project reflects my belief that art can be a tool for connection, exploration, and transformation. It’s also a glimpse of what I aim to achieve with my future studio: a space where creativity meets technology to redefine what’s possible.

Now, I feel it’s time to create something deeply personal, a space where all my experiences, passions, and visions can come together. I’m dreaming of building my own art studio to continue exploring innovative projects while supporting others in their creative journeys.

This studio will embody everything I’ve learned in decades of pushing boundaries, fostering inclusivity, and empowering people to use technology for self-expression. It will be a space where I can create immersive, interactive art, produce educational tools, and collaborate with talented individuals to inspire and transform.

With your support, I aim to bring my vision to life. And I plan to use this fund to:
  • Allocate funds to secure a studio space tailored to my needs as an artist,
  • Purchase tools like a new computer and other resources necessary to produce high-quality, cutting-edge art.
  • Create a flagship artwork that will mark a new chapter in my career and serve as a foundation for generating revenue.

This initial seed funding will enable me to establish a sustainable creative cycle and expand the studio's impact over time.

Your contribution means so much to me. This studio will give me the freedom to create, teach, and inspire others for years to come.

Thank you for being part of this journey.

Warmly,
Alexandra.
