Pass the Mic!

Tax deductible
"Pass the Mic" is Portland Meet Portland's first annual week-long Immigrant and Refugee Youth Music Camp! The Music Camp will culminate with a LIVE community performance of the youth. This camp will be ABSOLUTELY FREE to the 20 youth we’ll include and to the concert goers.

Portland Meet Portland is teaming up with Wilson Vediner, who helped start the highly successful Pendleton Rock Camp and guitarist for Portland based bands Months and Point Juncture, WA. Through this collaboration, we will pilot the first 2018 Pass the Mic Music Camp in mid-July to serve the creative needs of immigrant and refugee youth in Portland and to foster cross-cultural relationship building through music!

At Pass the Mic, immigrant and refugee youth will form bands and learn songwriting, how to play instruments, how to run technical equipment, how to design and create band logos, how to collaborate musically, and other things essential to performing the enjoyment of building cross-cultural community.

Finding and exploring voice, belonging, and identity as an immigrant or refugee youth is often a struggle, especially when doing well in school, providing resources to their family, and obligations to their community can be draining. These youth are in need of creative, fun, and engaging spaces to develop themselves as people (personally and professionally). This camp provides that opportunity through cross-cultural collaboration and expression.

We have talked to several individuals, organizations, and even staff of Portland Public Schools who work with immigrant and refugee youth and we all agree....WE NEED THIS MUSIC CAMP!

What we have in place:

1. Committed camp counselors who are both locally and nationally recognized musicians
2. A culturally appropriate organization where the camp can live and be sustained
3. A proven rock camp program template and curriculum
4. A fearless leader (Wilson Vediner)!
5. Opportunities for community outreach and advertising
6. Youth who want to participate
7. Potential spaces for the camp and the performance venue

With your contributions, we will be able to:

1. Pay stipends to camp counselors
2. Pay for space rental for the camp and the performance
3. Feed the kids during the day
4. Rent equipment and buy camp supplies
5. Make tee shirts and CDs of the youths’ music
6. Advertise and market the camp

All this will set us up for success this year and for years to come.

We hope to raise $7,500 by July 16th (the day the camp starts)!

Donate to this project and put your money to work for celebrating diversity and making Portland a home for our local immigrant and refugee youth!

Your Donations are 100% Tax Deductible!
