Immunotherapy for Pancreatic Cancer Treatment

Hi, my name is Michelle and I live in Melbourne Australia.

In July of 2023 I was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. I carry the MLH1 gene which comes under the umbrella of Lynch Syndrome. People with Lynch Syndrome have a genetic predisposition for early-onset gastrointestinal cancers. 

Unfortunately, this is my second time facing cancer in this lifetime, having survived stage 3 Stomach Cancer in 2011 at the age of 40. 

I start a course in Keytruda Immunotherapy on Tue 8th Aug. This medicine treats cancers by working with your immune system. Studies have seen amazing results in patients with Lynch Syndrome-associated cancers. My oncologist along with his associates are certain this will give me the best possible outcome.

Four treatments are required over 12 weeks followed by major surgery to remove the head of the pancreas and to re-route my already re-routed insides. 

The plan is to then provide me with another two years of immunotherapy to reduce the risk of the cancer re-occurring.

This prescribed type of Pancreatic cancer treatment is not yet on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme so we must fund it privately. We are currently looking at around $3000 per treatment until we reach the cap of $61,000.

Anyone that has been through cancer knows that it is not cheap. Medical expenses as well as associated expenses like additional prescription medication, scans and specialist appointments all come out of our families living expenses.
