Help Immu Bekele Uniyal

Many of you will have already heard the devastating news that the Supreme Court of India has after a 32 year battle now ruled that Immu is to be evicted from, Wolfsburn, her home of 35 years with no compensation and no opportunity for recourse.

Wolfsburn, a special place known to so many of you, is to be seized by the Government of India for no real purpose other than they wish to claim its title.  Immu has been ordered to vacate within 3 months.  This is a horrific injustice and leaves Immu in an untenable situation, with no income, no home and no ability to recover the value of her home.  This is all based on an incorrect claim that the land belongs to the Government even though we can demonstrate from the Government ‘s own records that the land was never the property on the Government of India but was held as freehold from the earliest times of British settlement in Landour.  It seems this proof is of little interest to the Government.  There is as we are all aware a big difference between what may be true and what may occur during the legal process.

Immu will get little to no payment and will receive a small cheque for the value of the buildings only as they cost to buid in 1985,  not the land value or even present building costs.

You all know this amazing beautiful woman Immu.  You know firstly that she will dislike that I have even done this.  She is not one to seek special treatment.  But I do this because I love this amazing, caring, selfless woman and I know so many of you share my love.

There are those of us who know precisely what Immu has gone through in her life.  Her pain and suffering. But we are few and far between because Immu despite everything she has been through has never dwelt on self pity or complained, never showed her pain.  She has instead with every part of her being strived to make people’s lives better and happier.  She has shown only love and deep care for all of us.  Each of you that know Immu will have your own memory and experience of Immu’s generosity, care, love and hospitality.

I won’t begin to go through Immu’s life suffice to say she had her children younger than we would expect, left her homeland and family and lived a difficult life with a man who left her little but a Supreme Court case for her home.  Through it all though Immu didn’t let it break her spirit.    We have thrown everything we could at trying to save her home, taking on the might of the Government of India and its Defence Department, believing justice would be served.  It wasn’t and now Immu finds herself homeless with no financial resources.  Having lost her home and her only source of income, and at risk of losing her community and her friends, she is now homeless in her adopted country where she has lived since 1985. A place she has lived in far longer than her birth country and far from her daughters and beloved grandchildren.  Even if it’s remotely possible and what she desires, relocating here to Australia will be a lengthy and very costly exercise.

I don’t know what the future holds for this beautiful woman, where and how she will live, but I do know that we all need to help her as she has helped us.  We need to put our arms around her and protect her at her hour of need.  She may not forgive me for having done this but I would not forgive myself or call myself her son if I did not do all I can to ensure Immu does not face a more difficult future, having lived such a difficult past and having provided so much love and care for us all.  And I know I can do this because I know how many of you share my love and experience of Immu.

Thank you for any thing you are able to do and contribute. By all means speak to anyone of influence in the Government who may be able the change this terrible situation.  I have no idea what figure to put towards this fundraising all I do know is she deserves the best of us. We don’t know how she will use the funds exactly it’s too early to know quite what to do but you know they won’t be wasted. They will certainly go towards legal fees, housing and exploring avenues for immigration and for setting her up for a new life.  Because Immu deserves a home, deserves the peace and stability that brings.  She does not deserve what has been handed to her and she does not deserve to have to struggle at this time in her life.  Should Immu find by some miracle in some better situation you know she will pay your generosity forward to the next person in need.

If Immu has taught us all something it is that you open your hearts to people, you give selflessly and lovingly.  She has done that for all of us.  With love and care, Tim, Immu's son in law
