In honor of late Corporal Sonya Y. Askew-Martin

Dearest Friends, Family, and Community members,

On Friday May 5th, 2023 , an angel appeared before Sonya Y. Askew- Martin and ushered her to her eternal home. Sonya departed this realm with her daughter and friends surrounding her in love. She was born March 30th, 1964 to Rose Barnes and the late Joseph Askew, in Portsmouth Virginia.

At an early age she was a member of the COGIC family where she was a talented musician and singer. She served our country by joining the magnificent United States Marine Corp and parted ways as a Corporal as she exhibited an ever-increasing degree of maturity, leadership and professionalism. She was a highly intelligent woman and was a college graduate of Christopher Newport University, where she was a member of the sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha.

Sonya leaves her daughter Tealece; Mother Rose; Brother Joe and Sister Mildred as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives and friends to cherish her memory. She is preceded by her Sister Roser and Father Joseph Sr.

Tealece currently resides in Las Vegas, Nevada, but has spent much of the past several weeks dropping everything to travel back and forth in the best effort to help her mother. Tealece selflessly did everything she could during Sonya's final weeks to help her spend a little more time here with us. Tealece is currently carrying the weight of all the arrangements, and the financial burden that comes with it. We are requesting donations to help lesson this burden, to allow Tealece to grieve as peacefully as possible, and for her to not have to rush through her childhood home and back to reality with a broken heart and scarred soul.

A memorial will be held on May 20, 2023 1 p.m. at Whitings Funeral Home. The family requests that support be made in the form of donations in lieu of flowers.
