A message from Karen:

To Our Friends and Family,

As some of you may or may not know, my family’s life was completely flipped upside down a couple of months ago when Adam, the father of my boys and my best friend, was diagnosed with cancer. I’d like to share Adam’s story in hopes of raising money so we can focus on his healing and alleviate some of the financial stress as he is no longer physically able to work.

Around 6-7 months ago, Adam visited the ER for pain that was dismissed as kidney stones. After 3-4 more visits to the ER, his pain was finally taken seriously and they found a 4 cm tumor in his bladder. To say the news was devastating is an understatement. We felt some peace of mind when they told us he would just need to have it removed and receive chemo and radiation only on the bladder. With the removal of the tumor, they found it was malignant and very aggressive. The weeks that followed brought us a string of bad news followed by worse news.

We were informed that Adam has a rare form of cancer called small cell carcinoma of the bladder. This type of cancer is so rare that 1-9 out of a million people are diagnosed yearly and very little is known about it and how to effectively treat it. This form of cancer is usually in the lungs, so they decided to treat it like small cell carcinoma of the lung. He was admitted into the hospital from the appointment to begin chemo immediately since the cancer was extremely aggressive. The doctors told him the prognosis is poor and, with chemo, he has 10 months to live. He initially reacted how I imagine most people do, and it’s been difficult trying to keep his spirits up. But, I believe in a higher power and Adam is ready to fight and focus on a more positive outlook.

Adam was discharged from the hospital the day before Thanksgiving and we were having a tough time adjusting to our new “cancer-fighting” lifestyle. Then the higher power stepped in and we received a message from Adam’s amazing sister, Amber. She told us about a hospital in Tijuana and not to worry about the cost. She sent us a link for us to do our own research on CHIPSA where he would receive immunotherapy, education on various classes and alternative therapies in addition to a low dose of chemo to heal his mind, body, and spirit.

We gratefully took her up on her offer and Adam was admitted to CHIPSA on December 12th for 3 weekends of treatment. The minute we walked in we knew it was the greatest gift he could have received. We were greeted by warm and accommodating staff and we both immediately felt a sense of hope. His day now consists of cooking classes, support groups, juicing, coffee enemas, and educational classes and movies. I was able to spend the first weekend with him but had to leave him on Sunday. Although it was heartbreaking to leave, I knew he was in good hands and the boys and I will be back for the holidays. I have no words to describe the love and gratitude I feel for his sister Amber. They share the same big heart and we are forever blessed to have her in our lives.

The outpouring of love, help, prayers, phone calls, and text messages have really been helping us through this journey. Although Adam’s treatment in Mexico is covered, his medication will cost more than expected and will be difficult for us to cover since we went from 2 incomes to 1 so unexpectedly. Adam and I aren’t ones to ask for help so it’s difficult for both of us to be vulnerable and start this GoFundMe page. Anything will help and be greatly appreciated.

Remember to be kind to your loved ones every day and to give them lots of hugs and kisses. I will try my best to keep everyone updated on his journey. Thank you for all of your support!
