The Ecorse community is grappling with an unimaginable loss as we mourn the tragic passing of one of our own, Dennell Kemp Jr. On a fateful night, Dennell, a senior at Ecorse High School, was taken from us in a senseless act of violence. He was just 18 years old.

Dennell “Nelly” Kemp Jr. was a name that resonated throughout our tight-knit community, not just as a student but as a beacon of strength, talent, and hope. He was a remarkable athlete, excelling in football, basketball, and baseball, and he did so with an infectious positivity that touched everyone he encountered.

Nelly's athletic prowess was legendary! He was a star on the football field, basketball court, and baseball diamond at our small Downriver school. As a starting member of the Ecorse basketball team, he helped lead them to the Division 3 state finals in 2022 and the state semifinals in 2023. His presence on the court was more than just skill; it was an inspiration to his teammates and a testament to his unwavering dedication.

Not limited to the basketball court, Nelly was also recognized in the world of baseball. He earned a spot on the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association's All-Star team, showcasing his versatility and skill. Additionally, he was honored as a First-Team Division 3 All-State selection by the MHSBCA, solidifying his status as one of Michigan's finest athletes.
