In Loving Memory of Deodoro Monge Gutierrez

On April 21, Sunnyside lost a piece of its heart. My dad, Deodoro Monge Gutierrez, owner and chef of Bliss 46 Bistro, passed away from complications of COVID-19. His talent as a chef and restaurateur was recognized by both the Michelin Guide and Zagat's, my dad was always known for his humility and kindness and did everything with so much love for the Sunnyside community.
While my family deals with this huge loss of my dad, we are left grappling with the financial cost of his medical care and funerary expenses. My dad was at Elmhurst Hospital for three weeks before passing away, and now the bills have started to arrive. We had my dad cremated and plan to hold a memorial service in his honor later this year and return his ashes to Mexico to be buried alongside his parents. With our restaurant shuttered, and our family broken by my dad's loss, we are emotionally overwhelmed and financially drained.
We know what a special community Sunnyside is, and we've always felt so blessed to be part of it. I know so many of us are hurting right now, but I want to humbly ask that some of our family, friends and customers contribute to this fund to alleviate the financial burden on our family. We want to ensure that my dad gets the burial that he deserves and would want.
All the proceeds will help cover medical and burial costs for my father; anything above the cost will assist our family get back on our feet as we transition into our new reality without my father.
Anything that you can do will be greatly appreciated and we thank you for your kindness, generosity and friendship from the bottom of our hearts.
