Donald Gillman (July 18, 1944 - Dec 7, 2023)
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Donald Gillman, a beloved educator, mentor, coach, and volunteer. Diagnosed with brain cancer in August, Don courageously battled alongside his wife, Mellie & family until his recent departure in December.
Over three decades, Don made an enduring impact on both San Marino Academia & Community. Don embarked on his educational journey at Stoneman School in 1985, dedicating himself to teaching Emotionally Disturbed Students in grades 3 to 6 before transitioning to Carver. Beyond the classroom, his passion for enriching the lives of students led him to initiate chess and soccer programs during his lunch breaks at Carver. Additionally, he orchestrated California Gold Rush 49er days at dawn to bury gold for our children to discover. Don was not only a teacher but also a true enthusiast who strove to instill a love for learning and sportsmanship in every child he encountered. Even after his retirement in 2008, he continued to volunteer at Carver events, ran soccer camps, and extended chess camps to both Carver and San Marino Chinese School until 2019, leaving an enduring impact on the Carver community. Your children certainly remembers him!
Don's commitment to education and his extraordinary contributions did not go unnoticed. He received prestigious awards, including Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) Teacher of the Year Award, Carver Dad recognition, and the Carver Honorary Service Award. These accolades stand as a testament to his exceptional dedication and the positive influence he had on the lives of those around him.
In the spirit of compassion and kindness Don has shown everyone, we are launching a fundraising campaign to aid his wife, Mellie and family during this incredibly difficult time. Losing a loved one is an emotional burden that no one should bear alone, and by coming together, we can help alleviate some of the financial strain that often accompanies such a tragedy.
Don’s wife, Mellie, who also retired from Carver as a teacher’s aide is now facing a future without the guiding presence of her husband. As we reflect on the warmth and generosity that Don brought into our lives, let us channel those sentiments into tangible support for his grieving family. Your donations will go directly towards easing the financial burdens associated with memorial/funeral expenses, medical bills, and the day-to-day challenges that lie ahead.
Please consider contributing whatever you can to this memorial fund in honor of Donald Gillman. Your generosity will not only provide practical assistance but also serve as a testament to the years of selfless contribution Don had showered our community. Together, let us surround his family with love, strength, and the support they need to navigate this heartbreaking journey.
Kindly adjust the GoFundMe tip percentage to ensure that the majority of your generous donation goes directly to Don’s grieving family, rather than towards processing fees. Your support means the world to the family and we want to make sure every dollar goes where it's needed most.
A Celebration of Life will be held on January 6, 2024, at 12:30 pm at the San Marino Community Center, welcoming everyone to join in commemorating the life of this extraordinary individual. To RSVP, please leave comment with Mellie - donmellie4 @ y a h o o . com
