It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Hwang 황정식, a cherished partner, son, brother, uncle, and friend. John departed this world on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, at the Brooklyn Hospital Center in Brooklyn, NY, at the age of 32. He was surrounded by the unwavering love of his partner, adoring family, and devoted friends.
John's journey began on April 19, 1991, in Wayne, New Jersey, where he was born to Justin and Young Hee Hwang and was raised in Andover, Massachusetts. John's light was a beacon that illuminated the lives of countless individuals, radiating warmth, kindness, and boundless joy.
Survived by his beloved partner, Hong Li, John and Hong lived a beautiful life together in New York City and San Francisco, where their journey was filled with laughter, shared passions, and dedication to one another. Their common love for photography, exploration, and culinary delights took them on memorable adventures across various cultures and corners of the world. Recent travels to Portugal and South Korea allowed John and Hong to immerse in a vibrant culture and reconnect with relatives and friends.
John's legacy lives on through his loving parents, Justin and Young Hee Hwang, his cherished sisters, Jennie and Lisa Hwang, and his brother-in-law, William Em. His New York family Mei Hua Yang, Gong Chu Li, Ling Li, Gim Li, Ethan Li and Emma Li. He was an adoring uncle to his nephews, Liam and Asher Em, and loved his childhood dog, Coco. Each one of John’s trips home to Massachusetts always brought immeasurable happiness to his family and they celebrated being together with food, games and conversations that lasted all night. Wherever he visited, he displayed his belongings in his own curated layout - making any place feel like home.
John's memory is held dear by his extended family, including three uncles, seven aunts, and twenty cousins residing in Seoul, South Korea. His impact further extended across continents, as he formed a tapestry of friendships that spanned the globe.
Educated at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Massachusetts, John pursued his creative passions in Industrial Design. He had a successful career where his portfolio encompassed wearable goods, furniture, office design, consumer products, and package design, showcasing his imagination and innovative spirit. From his knowledge of design, John had a way of appreciating materials, quality, and craftsmanship. His acute eye for detail translated into his foundation and way of life.
Beyond his career pursuits, John discovered a passion for painting that allowed him to express himself in new ways. He gifted his paintings to his family, sharing a piece of himself and giving them a glimpse of his artistic world.
In the tapestry of life, John Hwang's thread was woven with brilliance, love, and compassion. He had a deep affection for the company of his friends and family when they gathered together. He cherished those moments of togetherness and found immense happiness in their shared presence. As we mourn his untimely departure, let us also celebrate the beautiful life he lived and the radiant spirit he shared with us all. John's memory will forever remain etched in our hearts, a reminder of the power of love, friendship, and the enduring impact of a life well-lived.
