In Loving Memory of Kurt Nissen

Donation protected
To know Kurt Nissen, was to love him. Despite his badass appearance, he was the gentlest giant anyone could ever hope to meet, with the most loving soul. His heart was as big as he was. His love for animals, big and small, was amazing and  overwhelming. His bright green eyes were as kind and understanding as could be, and his deep dimples and infectious smile could steal your heart in an instant. He would take the shirt of his own back for anyone. He was real and genuine and could make anybody laugh without even trying.

On March 28th, 2020, my dear friend Kurt and his beloved wife, my best friend, Dawn, spent their last day together. During their visit that afternoon with his daughter, Candace, Kurt found out he would be an Opa once again, this time to his first grandson, due in September, in addition to his angelic granddaughters, Charlotte and Finely.

Later that day, after a quick hello to his coworkers at Home Depot and a stop at the grocery store, Kurt suddenly lost consciousness at the wheel, with Dawn in the passenger seat. By the grace of God, Dawn was able to grab control of the wheel and maneuver the car to the side of the road, and, with the help of a Good Samaritan, put it in park and dial 911. After nearly 30 minutes of tireless efforts to revive Kurt on the scene, and even longer at the hospital, doctors and nurses sorrowfully announced that he was no longer with us. It was later determined that a coronary embolism, a blood clot to the heart, was the ultimate taker of Kurt from this world.

Dawn was then left with the task of delivering the heart-shattering news to Kurt’s parents, Herbie and Joan Nissen, as well as his two children, Candace (mommy of Finley and soon-to-be baby boy) and Kurt Jr. (daddy of Charlotte), and his loving sisters, Vicki, Sophia, Karen, Christina, and Kimberly. It was a phone call none of us ever wanted to receive and will never forget.

Dawn then had to go home to Kurt’s best buddy, Spike, their 14 year old black cat, who lived for sitting in his daddy’s lap to share a beer at night and watch their favorite shows and movies together. And Willy, his African Grey bird of 30 years who misses him everyday.

Due to the unfortunate timing of his passing, Covid-19 did not allow any of us, his friends and family, near and far, to say our proper final goodbyes. A celebration of life memorial will be held at a future date (undetermined at this time) to all gather and honor Kurt’s life in true Kurt fashion: with food, beer, and music.

As a tribute to Dawn and Kurt on their 13th wedding anniversary, today, June 15th, we are posting this tribute in hopes that we can show her at least a fraction of the love Kurt always did.
