On Monday, January 18th, 2021 our beloved Leslie Hagan-Morgan passed on to be with the Lord. As a family, we are still at a loss for words of the sudden shocking loss due to the virus. Leslie loved his family, his community and sought to bring better opportunities and enrich the lives of those he encountered. He was a loving son, husband, and father whose two children, greatly adored him. Leslie was greatly loved by many people across the globe. His family, childhood friends, mentors, and everyone he lent a helping hand to will miss his motivating, caring, and selfless nature. Leslie left a remarkable legacy at only 38 years old, his work was left unfinished.
Leslie was devoted to implementing tools of success in underserved communities. As the founder of the non-profit youth organization, City of Youth, in South Central, Los Angeles, he owned two charter schools and was also involved in politics. He was a member of the State Assembly 59th district of Los Angeles. After 10 years of community development projects, youth programming, and community outreach, Leslie took on another role in 2014 as the program coordinator for the Mayor’s Gang Reduction Youth Development Program (GRYD). This project helped transition former gang members into working, educated, and community serving inspirations within their respective neighborhoods. It was the years of service and a lifetime of passion for people and unity that allowed Leslie to lead this project to unprecedented success during his two-year tenure.
It is so hard to put into words all the amazing things Leslie was not only to us, his family, but the local community as well. As Leslie states in this video a favorite saying of his grandmother, "If you are born into a house and the picture frame is crooked and you die and the frame is still crooked you failed in life. Meaning if you came into a situation and didn't make it better then you failed."
We thank God that Leslie did not fail. He left us better and that, we will forever cherish.
