In Loving Memory of Mark Nakamura

Dear Beloved Friends, Family, and Coach Nak’s Basketball Community,

It is with profound sorrow that I share the devastating news of Mark Nakamura's sudden passing on January 12th, 2024, a week after his 54th birthday. The depth of sadness we feel is beyond words, and the void left by his departure is indescribable for our family and his lifelong friends. Mark’s decade-long legacy at Los Altos High School has left an indelible mark on the hearts of his players, parents, coaching peers, students, and staff, creating memories that will be forever held with deep gratitude.

I am Sandra, Mark's cousin and I’m writing on behalf of the Nakamura family. Mark and I share countless cherished memories, from double-buddy bike rides in LA to moments of laughter on the asphalt. He played a pivotal role in my life. He introduced me to my husband and how time has flown by, now our kids are in college. Mark was a constant presence at my kids' games, regardless of their significance. His love for my family was unwavering, and we will deeply miss him. The last time we saw each other was New Years and Mark rushed out, so we didn’t get to give each other a proper goodbye.

Mark loved coaching. He loved his basketball community, and we are forever thankful for the love he received in return. For decades, Mark dedicated his days to coaching, prioritizing it above all else. During family gatherings, he would share heartwarming stories of the growth and success of his players, finding immense joy in their achievements. A special thank you to Fred from the San Gabriel Valley Tribune for crafting a touching article about Mark and his impactful life as Coach Nak. https://www.sgvtribune.com/2024/01/12/los-altos-girls-basketball-coach-mark-nakamura-passed-away-friday-players-devastated/

In this challenging time, we turn to our extended family, friends, and the basketball community for support. Mark is survived by his parents and a younger brother. Mark was the primary caregiver to his parents, both in their 80s. They have faced numerous hardships, including surviving Covid, battling kidney cancer, enduring diabetic comas, helping Mark recover from multiple heart issues while navigating the daily struggles of life. We are asking for your assistance with extensive medical bills and to ensure Mark’s parents are able to provide Mark with a dignified farewell he deserves – a proper funeral, burial, and a final resting place.

Details regarding funeral services will be shared on this platform and through social media.

If you find it in your hearts to contribute, you will be assisting my auntie and uncle during this challenging time. Your support regardless of the amount will enable them to bid a proper farewell to their beloved son, our dear Mark.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Sandra & the Nakamura Family
