Life After Tragic Murder of Mother and Brother

The News Report

Memorial Video

I want to start off by saying that writing this is the hardest thing Ive ever had to put into words. As many of you may know my mom (Mary Lindsay, 39) and brother (Atif Muhammad, 15) were tragically taken from my family and I. My mother was a single mother of four, I am 19, the oldest of my siblings. My brother Atif was a the  twin of my sister who will forever be changed by his lost as well as my 8 year old brother. My younger siblings are being cared for by their dad and now i'm trying to pave my own way as I have always been with my mother. I would have never imagined that a senseless act of violence would have taken them away from me and the world so soon. Their passing has been a very devastating moment in my life and my younger siblings as well as close family and friends.

Finding the words to say about what they meant to me, and the relationship we had is something that I cannot just limit to words. My mother was all I had. Saying she was amazing woman is an understatement. She was more than a role model to me, but many others, my family, her friends, and coworkers. My sweet brother, to sum up what Atif meant to me in a few short paragraphs is impossible. He was such a warm person. He had such a good spirit and a huge heart. Although he was quiet, his presence was always known. He was such an easy person to get along with. My brother had so many amazing qualities which is what I will miss most. He had a passion for skateboarding, he was good at it too. Brothers like Atif teach you things on accident no matter what age.

Now as a far as what you may not know, the story, what had taken place, and everything that lead up to the tragedy that occurred. I want to clear some things up, seeing that many people have had false assumptions and opinions. To start off, my household included my mother, two brothers and my sister. My mother has been separated for almost 4 years and was in the process of divorce.  My mother was preyed upon in a vulnerable time in her life and unfortunately someone so evil took advantage of her kindness.  She was experiencing a lot of changes through the pandemic and adjusting. The man who took their life put on an act and pretended to be a very kind, professional person, which he wasn’t. Even going as far as lying about his age. This ugly truth came to the surface weeks before her death. My mother was struggling and I wasn’t able to save her from the reality she was experiencing. I want to make sure everyone can stop discussing her death and find ways to celebrate her life, both of them.

This is still so unreal to me and my family. My goal is too still push forward in life and achieve my goals as I would like too and my mom would have liked me to as well.  Before this tragedy in October of 2020 my mother lost her job due to the pandemic, so there were no stored away funds for tuition, medical/health insurance, and living expenses. My life has forever changed in many ways. It will be  challenging but I will try my best to not allow it to be. Things may seem questionable but I will be brave, It may seem empty on days but its still meaningful and my heart is still filled with memories. I pray that you find it in your heart to donate to help out or say a simple prayer for me and my family. All helps and I pray that this brings some sort of certainty to my future.
