Dr. Derek C. Sonnenburg passed away on Thursday, August 27 in Statesboro, Georgia. He was beloved and respected by his family, friends, and colleagues for a life defined by deep compassion, dedication, integrity, commitment, and generosity. Derek’s medical career of 31 years reflected a relentless quest to improve health care for patients under his care as an anesthesiologist. He will also be remembered for his hard work, trivia skills and vast knowledge, ambition, and great sense of humor. He was truly a family man with a kind soul and will be remembered as a huge blessing to his family and anyone that knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Karole Sonnenburg, daughter Stephanie (Jeremy) Worrell, son Ryan, parents Donald and Bettymae Sonnenburg, sister Gretchen Wells, granddaughter Olivia “Livy” Worrell, seven nephews and nieces, numerous in-laws, and long-time friends. He will be greatly missed by all.
