In memory of Alan Silverman

Donation protected
Alan Silverman passed away in New York on 15 April after a long struggle with brain cancer.  Alan was a Peace Corps volunteer in Senegal in the 70’s and after that he worked for the United Nations for over 35 years, retiring in 2010.

Alan devoted his entire life to the defense of human rights, promoting the wellbeing of children and adolescents, addressing HIV worldwide and to fighting all forms of stigma and discrimination. Thanks to his exuberant charisma he cultivated an impressive network of friends around the globe.  He was a natural at training and facilitation, always bringing the best out of people and promoting understanding and consensus.

Throughout his life, Alan also supported different organizations because he was convinced of their mission and values. As you can imagine, he vetted them quite carefully and in some of them he was personally involved, helping with work planning and management ideas.

In his memory, we ask that you contribute towards a fund that will be divided among the following 13 organizations, in his name:

- Southern Poverty Law Center
- OutRight Action International
- Development in Gardening
- Fire Island Pines Foundation (medical services for the community)
- Human Rights Campaign
- Abzyme Research Foundation
- LGBT Center New York
- Gay Men’s Health Crisis
-National Gay and Lesbian Task Force
- Lambda Legal
- Services and Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Elders
- University of Texas School for Social Work (Alan started an endowment for scholarships)
- Canary Foundation (research for early cancer detection)

If you cannot contribute with funds, we invite you to contribute in other ways: plant a tree in his name (and please share a photo and description of the location on Alan’s Facebook), volunteer with a local organization in your community, help a neighbor or someone in your community who may need a helpful hand, or find other ways.
