In Memory of Aleksei Vanhee
Donation protected
On September 18, 2020, Aleksei Vanhee lost his life in the sea off the coast of Portugal. As a strong swimmer, he regularly went swimming in the ocean but was swept into a rocky area until his friends saw him disappear in high swells. Emergency rescue crews, along with the community mounted a big search for two days and found his body on Sunday, September 20.
Aleksei, 29, will be missed by his parents, sister, his friends in the community around him in Furnas and Luz, Lagos, Portugal, and his extended family and friends in the many countries he lived and traveled in - Canada, Belgium, Russia, France, and Portugal. In Portugal, he had found his heart and home and was contributing to the community. We want to honor his memory, his talents, and his efforts by encouraging all to contribute and help us reach $6,000 (€4,000) to do the following:
1 - We want to self-publish a book with his poetry. It will be filled with his poems, various things he has written to people, pictures of places he visited, people he loved, and even the dogs he befriended. A copy of this book will be mailed to anyone who leaves their name and address, regardless of whether they are able to contribute financially.
2 - At least $1,000 (€650) of the above amount will be donated to the dog shelter in Luz, Lagos. Aleksei was known for befriending stray dogs and had chosen one dog to become their ‘Mascotte’ for a rejuvenated rock climbing school in the area. https://www.facebook.com/cadelacarlota/
Aside from our own fundraising initiative, we want to also encourage people to donate to a cause Aleksei was very close to. He was helping a local family that he was very close with. Quirina and Dror and their two children had lost their home in a fire, so Aleksei was trying to help fundraise and rebuild their home. You can donate directly to their Gofundme here and leave a note that Aleksei inspired you. https://www.gofundme.com/f/from-green-hill-to-black-wasteland?utm_source=facebook&fbclid=IwAR0Oxw-q59M6NuK_zxBlwYpMmFaS0lglkPqii65xdX8r1qTNfcE_xsd74Kc
Any surplus funding from this initiative will be divided between the dog shelter and the fund to restore Quirina and Dror's home.
