In Memory of Alfredo Climaco

Alfredo Climaco, a rising restaurateur affectionately known as Portland’s Piña Colada King, passed away from complications related to COVID-19. Six months ago, Alfredo opened Tropicale, a colorful outdoor bar that mirrored his vibrancy, warmth and love for life. A loving son, brother, and father, Alfredo was a friend to anyone who met him.
Alfredo’s generosity was bottomless. He loved making people feel happy and welcome. He worked hard to make Tropicale a friendly, inviting and inclusive escape for all. The team at Tropicale was very close and quickly became his second family. He wanted everyone to be part of the journey and to be involved in his many plans for the future.
A tireless worker who held full-time jobs since he was nine years old, Alfredo immigrated to the United States from Mexico in 2015. He learned English by enrolling in business classes at Portland Community College, where his teachers quickly understood his drive, intelligence and ever-positive nature. He was a visionary who saw opportunity everywhere, a dreamer with limitless ambition.
Tropicale was his first bar, but Alfredo had so many plans for the future. With his growing cocktail empire, he wanted to give back to the local restaurant community that he had been a part of for so long. He was adamant about lifting up others, especially the Portland Mercado community that supported him since he started making drinks.
We are saddened beyond measure at his sudden passing. He leaves a void in our hearts and in the lives of so many. Your support will not only help Alfredo’s family cover medical and funeral costs, but will also give back in Alfredo’s name by way keeping his dream alive through Tropicale, the dream bar he brought to life through the toughest of times.
We will miss his gigantic smile and caring personality, but the memory of Alfredo and his inspiring story of growth and perseverance lives on. Thank you for your support and kindness.
