In Memory of David Sawyer

On September 10, 2022, David Sawyer died peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was a remarkable woodworker and teacher and will always be remembered for his generosity, intelligence and kindness. For over 30 years, Dave built Windsor chairs using traditional green woodworking techniques, creating functional works of art.

During this time, he also shared his knowledge, discoveries and patterns openly and supported a generation of green woodworkers as they sought to deepen their knowledge and understanding of traditional chairmaking. Those who watched him work saw a man who, though he loved words, didn’t talk much, but thought deeply and expressed himself in the work of his hands, whether that was mending a broken toy or building a ten-foot bench.
