In memory of Ethan Joseph Watkins

In loving memory of Ethan Joseph Watkins 18/05/2004 - 30/11/2020.
Ethan sadly passed away on 30th November 2020. This page has been set up by close friends in response to people asking how they are able to make donations to Ethan’s family during this very tragic time. Ethan’s family expect nothing but would like to express their gratitude to those who have passed on messages of condolence or asked about how to give donations in memory of Ethan and in support of the family.
Any donations kindly given will be put into an account specifically for Ethan’s younger sister, 8 year old Emmie, who Ethan loved very much; funds will be allocated as appropriate to put in place any necessary support for Emmie and / or to provide for her future and give her the opportunities that Ethan sadly never got to experience, which will be a small comfort in this harrowing time.
Ethan struggled with his mental health for many years which deteriorated at the time he transitioned from primary to secondary school. Ethan had a diagnosis of extreme social anxiety, depression and extreme O.C.D, as well as Asperger’s. Ethan's extreme social anxiety caused him to be unable to leave the house from 2018 onwards, which prevented him from socialising with friends as he did when he was younger. The family are very private and would not usually share this information to protect Ethan's and the family’s privacy, but in light of the circumstances surrounding Ethan’s passing the family would like people to have an understanding of Ethan’s struggles, as well as his happy times. They hope sharing this information will also raise awareness around mental health in children and the struggles that many families go through, often due to the huge gaps in child and adolescent mental health services.
Cara and the family fought day and night to try to get the correct support in place for Ethan due to the barriers they constantly faced trying to get the support Ethan so desperately needed. Although the family reached out numerous times to various organisations and charities and various medical and psychological treatments were tried over Ethan's latter years, due to the fight to get these put in place, this was sadly to no avail.
It is important to remember that Ethan's diagnoses were only 1 aspect of him and he had a remarkable and awe inspiring personality. Ethan was a tremendously compassionate and thoughtful child brimming with intelligence that would often leave his parents bursting with pride and blown away at how someone of such a young age could be so insightful, compassionate and demonstrate such abilities to question the world around him. Not only did Ethan frequently demonstrate his wonderous abilities for critical thinking and analysis, he was also in possession of wit that would leave his mother belly-laughing from not only his brilliant observational humour but also his delivery and comedic timing. His dry sense of humour was at times cutting, and often way beyond his years. He really was truly unique and possessed an exceptional mind and intelligence and was often called a "genius" by many who met him.
Ethan was incredibly close to his family (more than words could explain) and he loved them dearly. He loved 'boys nights' and gaming with his Dad, which was a passion they shared together. Ethan was a remarkable and kind Brother to his younger Sister and loved her very much - Ethan would often refer to Emmie as his best friend (as would she). Ethan had a way of comforting his Sister and showed such kindness and compassion towards her. He will always be remembered for his kind gestures and considerations towards Emmie and the love he showed his remarkable and beautiful sister, Emmie.
Ethan's home was packed full of love and unconditional support, including the love of 3 dogs who Ethan also shared a beautiful bond with. Ethan was very happy in his own home and was extremely close to his Mum, Cara - They took on every day together, one day at a time and faced his battles as one together. Cara even home schooled Ethan whilst studying herself for a PGCE. Ethan's family fought for him dearly and despite his ongoing battle with mental health it was a tremendous shock to the family losing Ethan - the pain they are feeling is unbearable and they will always grieve for the loss of their incredible Son / Grandson / Brother / Nephew.
With all the hurdles, challenges and obstacles that Ethan and his family faced over the years, we must remember Ethan for all the wonderful things he brought to this world and must never forget this beautiful boy for his extraordinary personality and huge heart. Those who were close to Ethan were blessed, he often left family feeling humbled and many people have said that Ethan was too good for this world.
Again, the family would like to thank everyone for the support shown in this difficult time following the devastating loss of Ethan and would like to thank every single person for their kindness. At this time, please remember to continue to be kind, sensitive and respectful to the family, giving them the time and space they need to grieve. Thank you.
