In Memory of James Sawtelle for Milk and Honey

Donation protected
James R. ‘Jim’ Sawtelle, Jr, of Ville Platte, LA, peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior October 31, 2020. He was surrounded by his wife, Marty, and their five children.  Jim was born the second of seven children, August 12, 1947, in Los Angeles, California. He grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico and attended St. Mary’s High School. He continued his education at the University of New Mexico, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. He was a veteran of the New Mexico and Louisiana National Guard. Jim had one employer, Cabot Corporation, for which he worked 38 years. In that time, he served as an Engineer, Plant Manager, and an Executive both domestically and internationally. He was an active member of Freedom Family Church.

Jim enjoyed spending time with and cooking for his wife, children and grandchildren for family gatherings. He also enjoyed ski trips, traveling to Mexico and Europe, and summer beach vacations with his family. Although Jim loved his home state of New Mexico, he had an undeniable love for Ville Platte, Cajun people, and Louisiana culture. He loved Louisiana’s natural beauty, hunting, fishing, and LSU Football. Being well traveled, his favorite cuisine was cajun food, and his gumbo and crawfish boils were a time-honored family tradition. He enjoyed giving his time and resources to those who were less fortunate and often made frequent missionary trips to Mexico.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Martha “Marty” Sawtelle, his five children, James III  (Laura), Steven (Sarahi), Ann (John Paul Hansen), Julie (Keith Jones) and Marie (Macy Vidrine). He is survived by fourteen grandchildren; James IV and Maria; Jennifer and Justin Hopkins and Gabrielle; Katherine and Jake Hansen; Julianne and Tim Jurjevich, Jackson and Maddie Jones; Peyton, Emile, Noelle, Margeaux, and David Vidrine; and one great-grandchild, Evangeline Jurjevich. He is also survived by his brother, George, and sisters, Barbara, Monica, and Caroline. He is preceded in death by his parents, James Sr. and Margaret, his sister, Julia, and brother, Richard.

There will be a memorial service in the upcoming weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Milk and Honey Orphanage in Tampico, Mexico.
