In memory of Jordan Smith

Donation protected
On Monday April 6th, at the age of 30 years old, our precious Jordan ended her life. She will always be remembered for the love and dedication she showed her family and friends, and for her passion, ambition and inspiration in her career within the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) community.

In her career achievements, Jordan began in the Autism Intervention Program, at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) in Ottawa, as a behaviour interventionist and transition classroom teacher. During her time in Montreal, she was a special education teacher at L.I.N.K.S High School, Westmount Park Elementary and Parkdale Elementary. In the past year, she was an Autism Spectrum Disorder Consultant for the English Montreal School Board.

She leaves behind her extended family, friends, colleagues, and students (her kids) some of whom fondly referred to her as Miss Jordan. Recently, she noted missing being in the classroom teaching, where her instinctive caring nature, compassion and enthusiasm was palpable. Her smile was contagious. It has been said she was a “light” in the field of autism. Her dedication to learn as much as she could about students with ASD was inspiring. She had a deep understanding for the needs of people with ASD beyond the commonly identified ones and she was an advocate for them. The vision was always to make direct and impactful changes for special needs students and their families by getting them the proper support and integration they needed, especially for those in lower income households with urgent needs.

During the current pandemic, with a physical ability to serve the autism community limited, she brought her unwavering generosity to the elderly, delivering food even on her last day.

Jordan’s last goal was to help just one individual family with children with ASD, we’re proud to concede that you touched lives and did this all along Jords! If you’d like to honour Jordan’s life and passion for making a positive and impactful difference in the ASD community, and you have the means, please consider donating to Productions Spectrum. We encourage you to please share this post along. Spectrum Productions  is a grass-roots community organization, committed to creating opportunities for autism in media production and the arts. In 2015, when Jordan moved to Montreal, she spent some time volunteering at their Youth Social Club. Spectrum fulfills her desired initiative of starting a girls club  for students with ASD, social integration and a focus on video production (Jordan loved making stop motion productions with her students). In honour of her beliefs around increasing access to, and diversification of services, the family would like to raise funds for participants to attend Productions Spectrum programming. Productions Spectrum is run by its director Dan Ten Veen, who will be receiving and administering the funds.

During what is coincidentally World Autism Month, we thank you for showering Jordan with the love she endlessly provided her students.
