In Memory of Kenrick Gallopa Mercado

With profound sorrow and a heavy heart, we announce the unexpected passing of Kenrick Gallopa Mercado at the age of 43. Ken, a son, a brother, a cherished uncle, and a true friend to many, held a special place in our hearts. To us, the Sanrio Sistas (Sansis), he was our sassy pants, a radiant beacon of positivity, and, above all, our best friend. Ken had an unparalleled ability to light up any room he entered, his charisma charming his way into the hearts of all who knew him. Though we miss him dearly, Ken will forever reside in our hearts.
The circumstances surrounding Ken's passing are currently unknown, and we kindly request that you respect the privacy of Ken's family as they navigate through this profound loss.
Ken's journey began in Hayward, CA, where he cultivated enduring connections at Harder Elementary School with Mary Grace Untalan and Cassie Thi, the OG Sansis. Progressing to La Vista Junior High School (later renamed Cesar Chavez), Ken expanded his circle to include additional future members of the Sansis: Chantra Chao, Charmaine Wood, Lorna Deperio, Jennifer Co, and Razel Bundang. This bond endured through Tennyson High School, where Ken ascended to the position of Senior Class President, graduating at the pinnacle of his class in 1998. Post-high school, he pursued a Bachelor's Degree at the University of California, Davis, and later, another in Broadcast Electronic Communication Arts from San Francisco State University. In August 2020, Ken relocated to Brighton, Massachusetts, for his master's studies in Gastronomy with a focus on Communication from Boston University Metropolitan College. In May 2022, many of the Sanrio Sistas gathered in Boston to witness Ken receive his Master's degree, a testament to his "wicked smaart" accomplishments.
As a proud Filipino American, Ken's passion lay in educating and celebrating his cultural roots through food. He founded Project Merienda, an after-school culinary arts program at the Bessie Carmichael Filipino Education Center in Soma. Ken's journey continued with roles as an Associate Producer for Seasons 6 and 7 of "Check Please Bay Area," a Digital and Social Media Specialist for the San Francisco Giants, and a Production Assistant for the Oakland Athletics. His final role was as an Associate Producer for "Basic Black" in Boston, the longest-running program on public television focusing on the interests of people of color.
Ken grappled with the loss of his older brother, Reocel Martin Gallopa Mercado, who passed away on September 23rd, 2023. Losing both Reocel and Ken within three months was an unforeseen and unimaginable tragedy for the Mercado family.
In the face of emotional pain and stress, which death often brings, financial burdens can compound, especially when covering the costs of two funerals in such a short span. We reach out to those touched by Ken's life, seeking support to raise funds for the Mercado family, aiding in covering funeral expenses and providing ongoing support for their future.
In moments of sorrow, people come together to help one another. We ask for your prayers for the family during this devastating time and invite those able to donate to contribute to this cause.
Ken's mom, Celina Hall, wishes to express her profound gratitude to everyone.
Thank you in advance for your love, kindness, and support.
