Good morning [team GFM],
My family and I spent a few hours with the Namdars over the weekend. Honestly, it doesn't look like the timing will be right to have this discussion [re GFM] with them anytime soon. They're flying to Israel this Wednesday (they decided to bury Liel there for religious reasons) and will be away for 3 weeks. So I think that the most sensible way [to proceed is to] earmark the GFM to a fundraiser that's 1)sanctioned by the Namdar family, since they themselves are participating in this Chai Lifeline half marathon; and 2)Chai Lifeline is perhaps the most recognized & trusted Jewish charitable organization. An open letter to my dearest friends Effie & Maya during this unbearable time,
I’m sorry. I’m sorry for this terrible loss that has befallen not only your family, but also your extended family – all of your brothers and sisters around the world. You know that Liel A”H was a bat-bayit in our home; the closest thing I’ve had to a non-biological daughter; always together with my ESK; the Jerry & Kramer of Old Tree/Park Circle. And because of my love for you and your family, my wife and I have tried to do anything and everything humanly possible to help and support you. It wasn’t much but it was the only thing we had to give – hugs, tears, pizza, sharing of links/status to the levaya, etc.
But I’m also terribly sorry for the pain that I may have caused you, your family, or others, in my rush to try and help in yet another way: Throughout the day I discussed starting a GoFundMe campaign with several of our “inner circle” friends. On 12/13/21 1:13pm Rabbi Shoub, together with one of these friends, and myself had a conference call during which Rabbi Shoub directed me to start a GoFundMe campaign in memory of Liel Namdar A”H, as an isolated initiative that’s fully independent from the Namdar & Cohen families, but with 100% of the use of these funds to be used by you, our dear friends Effie & Maya, for righteous causes as you see fit. During the call, it was stressed and agreed that the family should not be involved nor contacted in any way! But despite this, the extended family were contacted shortly thereafter, and apparently, they requested that the campaign be terminated.
Throughout the difficult day and night, I attempted over three dozen times to speak/meet with you Effie, your brother Rob, Rabbi Shoub, and Rabbanit Shoub (after her WhatsApp post including, “This was done against the advice of Rabbanim…” went viral), in hopes of determining the family’s true desire, free of all the unintentional misinformation that’s been rampant on all fronts during this chaotic time. I was unsuccessful with any of the USA contacts, but was finally able to reach you in the early hours of the NY morning. (Again, I’m sorry for calling you for such nonsensical topics during your time of mourning.) You advised me that although the family is touched beyond words by all of the outpouring of love and support, the GoFundMe campaign should be suspended for now, and I understand and respect your wishes.
I take this opportunity to announce that the GoFundMe campaign shall remain inactive until such a time when Effie or Maya decide otherwise. We thank all of those who have already donated towards this important cause in the memory of our dear Liel A:H, along with the many of you who have reached out to ask why the link isn’t working. May Gd repay you and your family a thousand-fold. Again,100% of the use of the funds raised to-date shall be determined by our dear friends Effie & Maya, for righteous causes as they see fit.
May you and your family be blessed and may we all of us -- all of the broader worldwide family -- never know any more sorrow.

For the many who have asked how to help: This GoFundMe has been initiated in memory of our precious Liel Dina bat Efraim & Maya Namdar - a pure and innocent teenager murdered by a drunk driver. 100% of the use of these funds shall be at the discretion of her family and for righteous causes. May Gd help us to help each other in times of celebration as much as we have during this terrible tragedy. And may the Namdar & Cohen families be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
