In memory of Maria Nicola
Donation protected
Our beloved Maria passed away on Monday 27th April 2020. She was 51 years old. Leaving behind her loving husband Tas and their two beautiful daughters Cristina, 14 and Sofia, 12.
A zest for life kept Maria fighting her entire time on this earth. As a teenager she battled with Kidney disease, but naturally, Maria fought her way through, with a new kidney donated by her dearest mother Cristina when Maria was 27 years old. We are thankful to Professor John Cunningham and his team at the Royal Free Hospital Hampstead for her care.
With a positive outlook on life and continuous medical care Maria went on to fulfil her dream of working with children, becoming a hugely respected teacher and mentor. Her passion radiated and infected us all.
In 2004, Maria met Tas and the final pieces to her life's dream fell into place. Beating the odds, they had two perfect daughters Cristina and Sofia.
In January 2018 Maria's health took a turn and after going through extensive tests and procedures, Maria was diagnosed with AL Amylodosis in September 2018. A rare disease that none of us had ever heard of, which posed many questions with answers that were uncertain. Currently there is no cure - only treatments to control the disease. We are thankful for the care of Professor Ashutosh Wechalekar and his team at the Royal Free Hospital, Hampstead and University College London - where Maria began her arduous battle. Having Amyloidosis caused her renal failure and damage to her heart. The family gives thanks to Professor Andrew Davenport and his team for Maria's care whilst receiving dialysis.
If anyone could fight it, it was our Maria. For anyone who was blessed enough to have had Maria in their life, they would be sure to agree that she taught us strength, resilience and determination.
Maria’s fight for life was incomprehensible, and was made all the more difficult when she contracted COVID-19. No matter how hard she fought to overcome this, she passed away on Monday 27th April 2020, without her family by her side.
Maria’s Funeral will take place on Friday 22nd May 2020.
Instead of flowers Maria specifically requested donations to be equally divided between her children and her two favoured charities: Kidney Research and to raise awareness and search for a cure for Amyloidosis.
We are so incredibly proud of Maria and the mark she has left on this world. We will continue her fight by raising awareness. As a family we will work with her girls to continue their mum’s wish for raising as much as possible to help her charities.
This is just the beginning.

This is very difficult for us since we know how many of you would have wanted attend. Maria wanted all of you to be there and to remember her. For this reason, we will be organising a very special memorial service for Maria, to celebrate her life, her successes, her battles. May this day come soon when we can all be together again.
With our thanks and love to you all.
