Hi my name is Alan Fairbairn and on the 5th of July I'll be undertaking my 3rd consecutive Rust 2 Rome adventure this time through the French Alps after already completing the Swiss (2018) and Austrian (2019) Alps routes to Rome and back successfully I decided that I had to have all 3 trips under my belt! Hence the name of my Facebook page for this year's trip " The French connection Shakie's triple crown".
This year I'll be raising funds in memory of my Grandmother for the local Alzheimer's group in the Scottish Borders to help people who suffer from this condition live's a bit easier. To see someone you love dearly , who inspired me to overcome my own diagnosis of Parkinson's being robbed of their memories , functionality and in the end her life is utterly heart breaking.
My Grandmother was one of a kind small in stature but one of the toughest, caring, loving and strongest human being's you could ever meet . She was never one to make a fuss or make a big deal of anything and I know that I would be getting it in the ear off her if she was still here knowing what i was doing in her name!!
At the moment Alzheimer's Borders are supporting around 180-190 people per month through their voluntary befriending service, memory cafes, activity groups and the Dementia Resource Centre itself. It was estimated 511 people in the NHS Borders area would be diagnosed with dementia in 2019. An estimated 14 of these people will be under the age of 65. The number of people living with dementia is projected to increase across Scotland, however the rate of increase in the Borders may be faster than the Scottish average as its population is older. It would mean a great deal to me if you could donate what ever you can to help people with this condition to make sure nobody faces dementia alone.
