Growing up, Muntu was a brainiac who grew up in Inglewood, CA. (LBC area). He was passionate with his studies...even went to The Spelling Bee competition in DC! He was trusted by his neighbors so much so that he was hired to help in stores as his first jobs...even though he was considered too young for it. To escape the mean streets of LA, he went to the Jesse Owens swimming pool to stir away from gangs.
His mother committed suicide before he was in his teens. He was raised by his cousins, yet he was still an excellent student throughout High School. He moved to the Bay Area after HS graduation to attend UC Berkeley. After journeys in different countries and cultures, his passion grew to train, counsel, and motivate people to change their lives for the better...resulting in his change of name to "Muntu Mbonisi", which means "God's Man" and "one who teaches".
Muntu was the Executive Director of the Mentoring Center in Oakland Preservation Park. Their purpose was to mentor the youth to stay off the streets and to create a better path by providing them education and essential resources. He was a committed Believer of Yeshua-Jesus Christ. He led Mens Groups, Small Groups...locally and internationally. Muntu is also a three time ordained minister. Through his teachings and mentorship, he has positively impacted countless lives.
Unfortunately, Muntu passed away suddenly on May 26, 2021. As a tribute to his life, I, Katrina Mbonisi, would like to raise funds to publish his book of inspirational prayers that he had written throughout his years as a "Prayer Warrior" and an "Ambassador of Christ". Any contributions would be truly appreciated that will continue his legacy of impacting lives around him.
