In Memory of Romeo Bungubung

This is probably the hardest thing that I have ever had to write, but my beloved father-in-law, "Papa" Romeo Bungubung, passed away on July 16, 2020, one day after his 66th birthday due to a battle with COVID-19 in the ICU at Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, FL. He leaves behind his loving wife, Nenita, and two children, Genalyn and Geoffrey.

He immigrated from the Philippines to America 8 years ago, with Nenita and Gena. He worked hard as a security guard at Brookdale Senior Living/Atrium where he was adrored by both staff and residents. He obtained his American Citizenship with his family in December 2019 and was so proud of the accomplishment. He was the definition of The American Dream. I could write an entire novel about his kindness, his selflessness, his devotion and love to his family, and his positivity. He was a jack of all trades, a man that could build and fix anything. He was a man that would give up anything to help others. He loved his family and friends, and welcoming all others as if they were a part of the family. He was adored by all who knew him.

My favorite story of "Papa" was the first time I was welcomed to his home to meet him.  I had been dating his beautiful daughter Gena and it was time to meet the family! She was so nervous, as was I. I pulled up to the house and walked to the open garage.  He saw me and opened up his arms and said “Ahhh, Jeremy!”, handed me a beer, and gave me a hug. He treated me as if we were long unseen family and about to catch up. In his eyes, I was already family. That’s the kind of man he is. All the great stories he shared, the taking me home to the Philippines for the first time, and entrusting me to marry his beautiful daughter. Even in his final days, upon learning I had returned to Jacksonville to see him,  sent me a message that read “Welcome Home, Jeremy. We love you.” That was the kind of man he is; even during adversity he showered me with love and compassion. That is how I will choose to remember and honor him.

This tragedy was unexpected to the entire family.  My mother-in-law, Nenita was unable to see him during his stay in the ICU and when he passed as she had also tested positive for COVID-19 and was in quarantine. She is now left to plan services for her husband as well as taking care of medical expenses from hospital visits and an eight day stay in the ICU. As a family, we are providing as much financial aid as we can,   so for those looking to offer their support to Romeo's family, I ask that you consider making a donation to this GoFundMe campaign, and encourage you to please share with your network of friends & family. The money raised during this fundraiser will go towards covering the costs of Romeo's funeral services as well as his medical expenses.

We realize that offering financial support to the Bungubung family during this uncertain time may be difficult for some. Please know that any amount is appreciated tremendously as we work closer to reaching our fundraising goal.
