On March 17th, 2020, the hockey community and the world lost a great man when Sam Kelly passed away peacefully at the age 60 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Marianne, and their two sons, Samuel and Nicholas. Whether you called him coach, boss, or just Sam, he was first and foremost your friend.
“The Bull” was the patriarch of IUP’s hockey program from 1988 to 2006, where he led and mentored many young men as the team's Head Coach and General Manager. His passion and dedication to growing the game at all levelsis one of the main reasons for the very existence of the S&T Bank Arena in Indiana, PA. Sam's reach extended far beyond Western Pennsylvania with his accomplishments and service to the American College Hockey Association, College Hockey East, and the Keystone State Games, just to name a few.
Sam battled cancer with the same courage, dignity, and grace through which he lived his life. Even when he was confronting his own health issues, he took the time to ask how your family was doing and always made you feel that you were part of his. In fact, we were all a part of the extended family he grew through the sport he loved. Even if you did not know Sam personally, you were likely brought to this page by someone who’s life was positively impacted by his generosity and kindness.
For a man who gave so much while asking very little in return, our hope and wish is that you can find it in your heart to give back to the Kelly family -- who so selflessly shared Sam with us for many years -- by helping them with his final expenses and medical bills. Thank you!
