In memory of Tobin Lathrop

Donation protected
My friend Christina O'Sullivan lost her long-time husband Tobin to pancreatic cancer last week. Tobin was only 52. During his battle with the disease, the family encountered many expenses that were not covered by insurance. Now that he is gone, Christina is not only dealing with grief and mourning, but a mountain of unpaid bills. Any donation you make will go towards helping her get out from under that debt.

With permission from Christina, here is her story ....

It is true that Canada has universal healthcare.
It is true that Charles (editor note: their son) and I pay zero health insurance, as we are
Canadian citizens and B.C. residents
It is also true that Tobin did not think to secure travel medical
insurance when he came up with us, and I am not allowed to use my
Provincial Health Number for his care, so I owe more than $100000 for
his month-long stay at our local hospital. He and I tried to transfer
him to Bellingham but he was too frail to manage entering our Toyota
Prius, and due to Covid-19 the international medical transport companies
weren't able to help us.

Another dastardly SARS-CoV-2 wrinkle: months before Tobin was diagnosed
(March 2020) with metastatic pancreatic cancer, at my behest we moved
post office boxes from Bellingham to the pene-exclave Point Roberts.
Tobin did go to Bellingham for his cancer care, but our mailing address
is Point Roberts. As a Canadian citizen who had to surrender her Green
Card October 10, 2019, Tobin's medical necessity of chemotherapy,
imaging, some hospital stays, blood draws, and prescription medications
was my ticket across the Douglas-Peace Arch crossing. Point Roberts
has no medical facilities, so I am unable to cross at Tsawwassen to pick
up our mail. It's a safe bet some bills are in collection.
