In Memory of Tom Scarborough: Support OW Baseball
Hi, this is Tom Scarborough III, Tom's son. I am creating this memorial fund with my sisters, Teresa, Karen, Jinny, and Catherine in honor of our beloved father.
We are all deeply saddened by his passing and miss him dearly, but find solace knowing that he is home with the Lord now and resting peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones who went before him.
Collectively, we wanted to do something special to honor his memory and support one of his greatest loves. If you had an opportunity to get to know our dad at all, you were probably aware of his lifetime love of baseball. He began playing baseball at a very young age and quickly fell in love with the sport. Growing up, he played all the way through high school and won many awards and accolades along the way. By the time he graduated high school in Cincinnati, OH (where he grew up), he was considered one of the best high school pitchers in all of southwest Ohio. He was drafted out of high school by the Cincinnati Reds and played in their minor league system for a few years before having to quit playing the game because of injuries to his pitching arm. But his love for baseball didn't waiver. He was first a Cincinnati Red's fan and followed them for many years but after moving south, he quickly became an Atlanta Brave's fan and followed them closely for the rest of his life. But in all honesty, he was just a big fan of all things associated with baseball and always loved the sport, whether he was playing, coaching, attending a game, or watching on TV.
After many years away from being directly involved with baseball, dad had an opportunity to get back onto the diamond when he was asked to get involved with the local high school team in Orangeburg, S.C., a place he and Mary called home for 40+ years. Dad joined the program as the pitching coach for the Orangeburg-Wilkinson (OW) Bruins' Baseball team and coached with them for several seasons. It was exciting to see dad back in baseball and the joy and happiness it brought him. Not only did he have a chance to again be close to the sport he loved, he also had the opportunity to be a coach and mentor to young students and athletes. And if you knew our father, you also knew this was something that he enjoyed doing and was important to him. He loved working with young kids and enjoyed the opportunity to be a positive influence in their life and help shape and mold them into better players and people. So, that is why we decided to set up this Memorial Fund in honor of our dad and all proceeds raised through this memorial fund will be given to the OW Bruins' Baseball program in memory of Thomas Scarborough, Jr.
I will manage the fundraiser and will ensure the funds raised are provided to OW.
