In Support of Kyle Hargrave from Hurricane Delta
Donation protected
Less than a year ago, my brother Kyle Hargrave, (Hazel’s Father), opened the doors to his brand new home for Christmas. It was truly the best Christmas present my family was given. For the first time in years, my entire family was able to be in one place at one time. Three days ago, that same house is now destroyed.
What you may not know is the turmoil Kyle, his wife Andrè, his son Mason, and my Godchild Hazel have gone through. Prior to moving into their new house, it took nearly A YEAR of living in a camper, multiple family and friend’s houses to settle in their home. Battles with insurance companies and their regulations for lifting a ‘newer’ house in our community is truly unheard of. Kyle followed the rule book and built what he thought would be his final settlement. Hurricane Delta picked up his ENTIRE two story home and threw it down. The pillars that the house stood on are now completely through the floor. What was once the living room where my family gathered for Christmas is now a maze of penetrating pillars through the floor. Instead of walking up stairs into the front door, I, personally have had to climb down into the house in order to salvage toys and clothes for Hazel. As you read this, the house is shifting. Pilings continue to appear through the floor, walls are splitting, and if you look up at the roof, my brother’s home is splitting in half. It is too unsafe now to re-enter the home in order to save personal belongings and necessities. Until insurance adjusters show up (no telling when), Kyle, André, Mason, and Hazel have to look at their demolished home without being able to save everything inside of it. It is truly the worst, heartbreaking waiting game. Insurance companies have not even reimbursed Kyle from the damage to his home that Hurricane Laura caused.
Unfortunately, it pains me to even type and share, but considering Kyle is a construction contractor (along with his multiple other jobs, crawfish farmer, alligator hunter, and hunting guide) he will have to be the one to demolish his own home. I can’t stress enough what a good, hard working, and honest man my brother is. No one deserves this, especially Kyle, Andrè, Mason, and Hazel who have been the glue to our family and the community of Mouton Cove, Louisiana.
The last 72 hours have been a whirlwind. My brother and his family have moved in with my mother and I have moved into my cousin’s in Maurice. I have spoken to my school advisor in Denver and have put graduation on hold until a later unknown date. All of us are continuing to work with our jobs on top of the instability of the coming months and very much a year.
There is still no power at my mother’s, but thankfully, we have a generator. I want to personally thank everyone who has reached out to me and my family the last few days. You guys have humbled us. To everyone who has called offering any type of support, my family and I are overwhelmed and cannot thank you enough. Everyone is going through some type of inconvenience and to know people will still reach out to help whether it be monetary, physically, or emotionally is a positive reflection of who Kyle, our family, and our community is. We are so grateful to witness the same amount of support as there is tragedy. I am posting this on behalf of my family who never asks for any thing.
We are and will remain unsure of what necessities my brother and his family will need in the many, many weeks and months to come. Any type of support helps. Please know that when you share this post, just sharing, you reach someone who is able to give monetarily. You sharing this post in reality is worth $5, $10, $20, etc.
For those who have followed my posts, my classmate Cale and his wife, who were effected six weeks ago, have received over $2,000 dollars because of you. They too are so very thankful for your support and are also continuing to rebuild.
If you would like to send support through another outlet, address it to Kyle Hargrave and send to my mothers address where they will be living for the time being at 18512 Prairie Road, Abbeville, LA 70510.
One thing I know remains true, we as a family and a community will rebuild and remain resilient.
With all of my love and unwavering gratitude,
Kady Rost
