In The Mood For Love, Not Hate
In the United States, xenophobia and racist hate crimes towards Asians have risen by 1900% since the COVID-19 pandemic began. This anti-Asian sentiment takes the form of unprovoked, violent attacks and robberies often towards elderly people, women, and families in the Bay Area, LA, New York, and across America.
We — Sunny, Vicki and Zoe — are Asian Americans trying to help our community here in the Bay Area by creating a symbol of safety and community support: emergency lanyards that we will design and distribute to our local community centers. Each lanyard includes a whistle, an emergency contact card, and helpful bilingual phrases. We are kicking it off with English and Chinese, looking to offer them in Thai, Filipino, Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese in upcoming batches. They can be worn around the neck not only to enable those who wear them but to signal to those around them that they are protected by their community. This is specially intended to help our non-English speaking Asian elders who might feel unsafe, need help walking home, or need emergency help in the event of an attack.
These AAPI safety accessories are meant to be a symbol of community support and proactive resistance towards Asian violence and hate crimes. We hope that the lanyards can provide an added ounce of security to those who are fearful of being alone outdoors or running their daily errands.
We are raising money to help cover the cost of the materials: ID holders, lanyards, and emergency whistles. We are very grateful for the generosity of The Aesthetic Union for printing the emergency cards pro bono.
Thank you in advance for your support as we work to advocate for our community!
