A History of Indians in Sun Valley

Tax deductible
Native Americans lived and thrived in the Sun Valley area for thousands of years before European settlers and miners arrived in the late 1800s.  Although they have remained integral to the region since that time, their story is little known.  We hope our new book will change that.

Based on a series of articles written by Tony Evans for the Idaho Mountain Express in 2011 and edited by retired Blaine County high school teacher Mike Healy, “A History of Indians in the Sun Valley Area” will be illustrated with historical and contemporary photographs and include a timeline. Evelyn Phillips has designed a handsome pull-out map that shows the locations mentioned in the book, from Redfish Lake and Galena Pass to the Indian Springs archeological site in Sun Valley, the Great Camas Prairie, and the Fort Hall Shoshone Bannock Reservation. The book also includes an 1881 mining map that shows "old Indian trails."

Our book uses original research, interviews with archaeologists, oral histories, and recent interviews with residents who have interacted over the years with Indians who once hunted, fished and camped throughout the Wood River Valley. It also includes interviews with Native Americans now living at Fort Hall Reservation who have retained close ties to the area.

"A History of Indians in the Sun Valley Area" gathers a wide variety of material about the valley’s first inhabitants, from the earliest archaeological evidence to the current day.  It will be of interest to local history buffs, students, and visitors to the Wood River Valley.

All our time has been donated.  What we need now is enough money to see the book through layout and printing.  This is a project of the non-profit Blaine County Historical Museum in Hailey, and a receipt documenting your gift to a 501(c)(3) organization will be emailed to you.

Won't you help us make the fascinating history of Native Americans in the Sun Valley area available to everyone for years to come?

With sincere thanks,

Tony Evans and Mike Healy
