Indira Wood-Green Breast Cancer Expenses

Donation protected
My name is Nina, and I am fundraising for my sister, Indira Wood-Green. Here is Indira's story in her own words:

"Hello! My name is Indira Wood-Green. I live in The Bahamas, and I am a breast cancer survivor. My 'journey' started October 25th 2018 when I found a lump as I leaned over to pick up my TV remote. I  went for a mammogram and ultrasound immediately, and a few days later, I had a CT scan and biopsy.  Ten days later, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 triple-negative breast cancer. That November, after PET scans, MRIs, and blood work, I started chemotherapy at Miami Cancer Institute (Baptist Hospital) in Miami, Florida. I had eight rounds of chemotherapy, bi-weekly, which I completed on March 7th, 2019. This significantly reduced the mass in my breast and lymph nodes. I had a double mastectomy on May 23rd, 2019, and was told that, unfortunately, I would also need radiation. I started proton therapy radiation on July 9th and finished my twenty-eighth and final round on August 19th, 2019. Since then, I have been on Anastrozole as my triple negative diagnosis came back as progesterone-positive.

My reconstruction surgery was scheduled for June, 2020, but because of the rising cases of COVID-19, I was unable to travel out of the country."

Indira developed a lump on her sternum, and was scheduled to have surgery on November 20th, 2020. However, she was still not able to travel to Florida because of COVID-19. The lump continued to grow, and she was finally able to see her doctors in Miami in March 2021. She underwent another round of tests and biopsies, which showed that the lump on her sternum is cancerous. There are also spots on her clavicle and above the area where her breast tissue was removed.  She has to undergo immediate treatment.

The past two and a half years have been difficult physically, emotionally, and financially.  Because she had to be in Florida for her medical care and due to the after-effects of the cancer treatment, Indira was not able to work a full schedule: she was able to work for the last three months of 2019, and the first two-and-a-half months of 2020, after which she was furloughed because of COVID-19. She was also able to work the last week of 2020 and the first two weeks of 2021. As a result of not working consistently, she has not been able to keep up with her rent and bill payments. She is now facing chemotherapy every three weeks for the next six months, and possible radiation treatment after that. This will prevent her from working  full time, compounding the already difficult financial situation.

Indira will have to cover her expenses while in Florida for treatment. To add to the dire situation, her insurance company has informed her that they will not cover her chemotherapy costs and only 70% of all other medical expenses at Miami Cancer Institute. To be faced with a recurrent cancer diagnosis is already emotionally stressful, and being faced with a huge financial burden makes it even more difficult to focus on getting healthy.

We are urgently asking for your assistance to help Indira with her expenses and to defray the costs of her upcoming medical treatment. Indira will appreciate any amount, great or small, so she can continue her journey. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
