Indy the German Shepherd Dog

My name is Mark, I am the owner of "Indy" the German Shepherd Dog. Indy is now 10 and 1/2 years old, a very robust male, pure blood atypical German Shepherd Dog.

On February 1st, 2023, while visiting a recreation spot for rent; Indy suffered a catastrophic Injury upon falling into an abandoned cesspit on the property. The "pit" was over 50 feet deep, later measured by rescue personnel at 52 feet in depth.

Professional and Fire Department rescue people were able to hoist Indy out of the "pit" over 5 hours later. Indy was rushed to an emergency room for immediate care, surgery and treatment for shock and injury. Within 18 hours of rescue, Indy was moved to a Specialty Hospital for neurological and advanced wound treatment and additional care.

After 10 weeks of multiple surgeries, infection debridement, infection control, tests and specialists from U.C. Davis: Indy was stable enough to come home for continued Therapy and Home Medical Care. He could not walk upon his arrival home.

Indy has been in constant therapy every other day, daily medications, and special diet for his recovery and care. A wheelchair and braces have helped him learn how to walk with his injury and he recently was able to "bunny hop" run on his own.

Continued water treadmill therapy, laser treatment, acupuncture use and daily rehabilitation will continue for an additional 6 months.

All this care has resulted in a significant draining of family life savings. The first 18 hours in emergency care was over $4,500.00.

Emergency ICU and Hospital care exceeded $86,000.00. Rehabilitation treatment and care every day has totaled more than $16,000.00 just to the end of year 2023.

Other costs of medical devices, prescriptions, home health care aids and necessities, admin and legal fees, travel costs and related items have cost more than $14,000.00.

There is no pet insurance for him, the original claim was denied.

Indy will continue to need at the very least, 6 more months of rehabilitation, therapy, water treadmill treatments, special medication injections and care. Projected costs are over $10,000.00

I, the owner, am out of money to pursue any more treatments and/or claim pursuits and desperately need help to recover from and continue Indy's care and treatment.

Indy is an especially important dog to my family, didn't deserve to experience his injuries and wants to live and be a vibrant member of the family. He wants to play with his siblings and enjoy a comfortable life.

All funds raised will go to restore family funds spent and pay bills being postponed for payment. Future expenses will use these funds to continue Indy's treatments. Any more than requested amount will be donated in kind to the San Diego Humane Society Animal Special Rescue folks to continue their training and support for future rescues like this.
