Elena, the Engineer children's book

What is this?
This is a first step in a wider initiative to promote gender equity generally and young women in science and engineering specifically. This particular project aims at publishing a children’s book (age 3-7) in the Republic of Moldova about a female engineer and introduces the thought that girls can enter a career in engineering, a field that has been male dominated. Hopefully, this not only promotes young women engineers, but also opens the door to all professions.

How can I contribute? What am I contributing to?
This project aims to fundraise an additional $1,500 to publish and distribute the children’s book Elena, the Engineer to 500 libraries across Moldova. When you donate $3, you contribute to one book copy being distributed to a public library in Moldova. We already have a private donation of $500. This is non-profit and all proceeds go to buying more books for libraries in Moldova.

What is the children’s book about? Who is Elena?
Elena, the Engineer is the story of a young girl who lives in a great palace and lives a pampered life. The story unfolds as Elena explores and develops her passion for science and learning. Among her accomplishments, Elena builds a system that provides heating to homes and a bridge that provides access to another village where she can seek out her next adventure.

Who are the authors?
Cristina Poleacovschi graduated from Technical University of Moldova and is currently a PhD student studying civil engineering at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Sheryl Feinstein was a 2014-2015 Fulbright Research/Teacher Scholar in Moldova. She is currently the Chair of the Education Department at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD, and will soon be Dean of the College of Education at the University of Nebraska, Kearney.

Who is the publisher?
Cartier will publish our book. They are a renowned publishing company in Moldova.

Who will distribute the book?
IREX will distribute the book to 500 libraries in Moldova.
